The rumour comes by way of a Twitter post by one Max J (@MaxJmb), who simply posted a black poster image, with July 2020 written on it. Along with the alphabet “Z” in the centre, surrounded by the outline of a phone. Beyond that, there is no further information that actually says what the phone is. To be clear, and if the phone really is expected to be called the OnePlus Z, this wouldn’t be the brand’s first mid-range OnePlus device. Since the tweet, the internet has been speculating that the phone is expected to serve as the successor to the OnePlus X that launched back in 2015.
— Max Jambor (@MaxJmb) April 28, 2020 What’s also under intense speculation is the hardware that is expected to ship out with the alleged OnePlus Z. As a mid-range device, OnePlus could ship the phone out with one of the two chipsets: the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765, both of which featured integrated 5G modems. Seeing how MediaTek recently had several of its chipsets struck off UL’s benchmark list, it’s quite likely that OnePlus may opt for the latter. The alleged July 2020 launch date also means that the OnePlus Z could mean that its parent company intends to challenge Apple’s iPhone SE 2020, along with its other Android-powered rivals – for dominance in the mid-range market. On that note, should the phone actually feature a large battery, include OnePlus’ 30W Warp Charging, and come at highly competitive pricing below RM2000, we think that the supposed OnePlus Z could stand a chance. As always, this is all just hearsay, so do take it with a large grain of salt. At least, until the phone’s supposed July 2020 launch.
