The new EOS R3 is equipped with a 24MP sensor, paired with Canon’s DIGIC X image processor which enables for high-speed readouts, as well as continuous shooting at 30 fps via electronic shutter and 12fps with the mechanical shutter. It comes with a maximum native ISO of 102,400, and is able to record 6K videos at 60 fps and uncropped 10-bit 4K at 120fps. Also onboard is the brand’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology and a new deep-learning algorithm that enhances its wide-range of autofocusing capabilities including head, eye, and torso detection. The camera’s eye-controlled autofocusing is definitely its most highlighted feature, as the technology has not been revisited since it was last featured on the EOS-3 back in November 1998. Canon says this version improves vastly over its predecessor and enables photographers to focus on a specific subject by literally looking at it via the electronic viewfinder (EVF), which is further aided by the camera’s 1,053 AF points. As for the build, the new Canon EOS R3 bears a resemblance to the flagship EOS-1D X Mark III, thanks to its integrated grip body. The company says that it uses a one-piece magnesium alloy design and is also weather and dust resistant. The new flagship shooter features a 5.76m dot EVF, a 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD screen on its back, and a new multi-function hot shoe. And like most mirrorless cameras under the EOS R line, it also comes equipped with a Canon RF lens compatible mount. Other than that, there’s LAN, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, built-in USB-C, one CFexpress card slot, and a UHS-II SD card slot. The EOS R is slated to be shipped out this November in the US, retailing at US$5,999 (~RM24,952) for body only. While its local availability and pricing is undetermined at this time, Canon Malaysia has already listed the new camera on its website – indicating an imminent local release in the near future.
