The box office results are in. Captain Marvel grossed a massive $US 455 million worldwide this past weekend, making it the biggest March opening ever and the sixth biggest global opening weekend of all time. Unless the word of mouth is poor and people stop seeing the film in the coming weeks like what happened with Batman V Superman, Marvel’s first female superhero movie will surely cross the $US 1 billion mark by the end of its run. As far as worldwide opening weekends are concerned, Captain Marvel only made less than Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II ($US 483.2 million), Jurassic World ($US 525.5 million), The Force Awakens ($US 529 million), Fate of the Furious ($US 541.9 million) and Avengers: Infinity War ($US 640.5 million).

The tale of the trolls

It first started with the barrage of tweets and other social media posts that took Brie Larson’s quote out of context and then accused her of being an extremist and a manhater. What followed was large scale downvoting by said trolls on the ‘want-to-see’ section of Rotten Tomatoes, even before the movie hit the big screens. To try and combat the nitwit movement, Rotten Tomatoes made updates to their site, which prevented users from voting until after the movie’s release. But the headstrong trolls powered through. On the morning of its release, the 21st entry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was hit with another wave of negative user reviews.

And if you’re wondering why we’re so confident that a lot of the reviews were by trolls and not actual viewers, here’s a fun fact: The 33% audience score was generated from more than 58000 reviews merely a couple of hours after the movie’s release. On the other hand, Avengers: Infinity War has less than 54000 user votes after more than a year of release. The folks over at Rotten Tomatoes have since begun clamping down on these trolls and filtering out the bots.  Look, we’re not saying that people shouldn’t criticize Captain Marvel — no movie is above evaluation and criticisms. However, we should only review a movie after we’ve watched and digested it. We shouldn’t hate on something for the sake of hating on it. Let’s not contribute to and be a part of toxic fandom.
