Marcin Iwinski, the co-founder of CDPR, says that his team would not be able to make the original April release window, and has thus pushed the game’s new launch date five months back to 17 September 2020. Iwinski’s note also indicates that the game is already complete and playable, but it’s clear that the man and his team of developer want a little more time to tweak and polish it further.
“Night City is massive – full of stories, content, and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing, and polishing,” Iwinski wrote in the note. “We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect”. Game developers that delay the launch of their titles to tweak them further are not uncommon. After all, it goes without saying that it’s better to publish a highly polished game, rather than releasing it early and be bogged down with bugs and glitches.
On the other hand, CDPR could’ve pushed Cyberpunk 2077’s launch back in order to avoid clashing with other major titles that month; Capcom’s Resident Evil 3 Remake will hit the store shelves on 3 April, while Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake will debut on 10 April.
