The new Tamagotchi arrives in the traditional egg-shaped design while also sporting R2-D2’s iconic design elements presented in two colour options for its body: white and translucent blue. The latter is more in line with the droid’s actual colour scheme, of course. The toy also comes with a 24 x 30 pixelated monochrome LCD display, with three physical buttons situated beneath it.
While the overall gameplay for the R2-D2 Tamagotchi remains unchanged from Bandai’s more recent releases, the device does come with exclusive Star Wars-themed activities for training the beloved Star Wars droid and also keeping it entertained. According to the sci-fi franchise’s official website, you’ll be able to train R2 in 19 different skills and play nine different games with it, including a firefighting mini-game and even holochess (aka Dejarik). Since R2 is practically a droid, you’re probably wondering if there are any feeding or hygiene related activities to be done. The answer to that is “yes”, and you’ll also be glad(?) to know that it does not leave any… litter for you to clean up. So instead of feeding it, you are required to charge its in-game battery, as well as keeping it clean when it gets too dirty. A very clever workaround there, Disney and Bandai.
