Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the iPhones of 2020 will have two 5G modem suppliers. One of them obviously being Qualcomm, while the other will be Samsung.
That said, it looks like Apple will be segregating the two modems based on their corresponding markets. According to Kuo’s research notes as obtained by MacRumors, Apple will use Qualcomm’s 5G modems for mmWave markets, while Samsung’s 5G modems will be used in Sub-6GHz markets. Incidentally, Apple’s decision to no longer use Intel’s 5G modems seems to be timed almost perfectly with the latter’s decision to exit the market. This means that come 2021, Apple may be using its own 5G chip in its iPhones. (Source: MacRumors)
